Welcome to rebuilt-automatic-transmissions.com!! Our purpose is to give to you the consumer some needed information to help you select an automatic transmission center within your own area, or help you make the proper connections to have a rebuilt automatic transmission shipped to your location.
But first, do you have a internal transmission problem, or is the problem external of the automatic transmission, or can it be repaired while the automatic transmission is still in the car usually for a lessor charge?
Most automatic transmissions today are computer controlled, so alot of devices external of the automatic transmission can cause it to fail, ie speed sensors, tps sensor, wiring, manual position sensors, if your transmission doesn’t want to shift and seems to start off in a higher gear (fail safe, no power to the solenoids in transmission) it could be an external problem.
Be sure when selecting a rebuilt automatic transmission repair shop, they have the proper equiptment to check your transmissions computer system, ie a scanner device (reads computer data and retrives stored trouble codes), a tranx2000 (see equiptment here) or quick test box (an electronic device used generally to disconect your computer from the transmission, and manually control the up shifting and down shifting of your automatic transmission) This is a quick way of finding out if the problem really is in your transmission.
Do not be afraid to ask questions, and while you are at it check out the shops walls, do they display certifications by ase, and certificates for attending the atsg and atra seminars? if they don’t then chances are good you will not be satisfied by any transmission repairs done there.
Do not be deceived by low cost automatic transmission tune services, most transmission problems will not be corrected simply by changing the fluid and filter. This is a maintnence service and should be performed on a regular basis, to keep your transmission operating properly.
Most transmission shops after checking your vehicle should be able to give to you a general ideal of what the repair costs might run, in order to get a total accurate price an internal inspection of the automatic transmission should be performed, usually there is a charge for this internal inspection. beware of price averaging you could be the consumer with less damage to your transmission. Why pay for the customer who had alot more damage than what you did?
Warning beware of the center that gives you a price for an inspection service of the transmission internally, and will not disclose a base price (the software) for a rebuild after properly checking your vehicles transmission.
So What is it that causes My Automatic Transmission To Operate?
Torque convertor, the large round device located between the engine and transmission, inside of the convertor you have an impeller and a turbine and a sprag assembly for multiplying torque, the impeller and turbine resemble 2 large fan blades, and drives the other hydraulicly, the sprag multiplies the torque. most torque convertors today contain a mechanical clutch (simular to a standard clutch), which is either pulsed on or else on-off, this clutch lining connects the motor to the transmission mechanically, thus you would experience a more fuel efficient operation of the vehicle. The convertor usaually drives the front pump of the automatic transmission. The torque convertor is where most of the heat within an automatic transmission is generated, excessive heat will cause your transmission to fail quick, usually the fluid that leaves the convertor exits to the cooler lines goes through your vehicles radiator, and then returns generally to the transmission as lubrication oil to the gear train, If your cooler system fails you will have a major failure within your transmission in “real time”, anotherwords within a few short miles. Front pump, the pump within the automatic transmission is the heart of the unit, it draws the fluid from the sump and supplies operating atf pressure for the unit, pumps are generally gear type or vain type, some have regulator valves to control the amount of pressure delivered to the unit, some have tcc (torque convertor) valves to apply the mechanical clutch within the automatic transmissions torque convertor, if your pump does not have those valves then those valves can be found within the valve body. Valve body, the hydraulic brain of the transmission, directs atf to the various componets ie; clutch packs bands etc. of the automatic transmission, on time when needed, to control upshifting, down shifting, and shift quality, usually attached to the valve body is electronic solenoids within todays computer controlled transmissions, ie. Shift solenoids, pressure solenoids, a tcc solenoid, and some have tcc pulsed solenoids, these solenoids receive signals from your vehicles transmission computer, to control the shifting timing and quality, usually if the tcm or computer detects a problem within your transmission or a problem external (electrical) of the transmission, it turns off all power to the solenoids, which is considered fail safe, and generally results in the vehicle taking off in a 3rd gear mode and not shifting, by turning the ignition key off then back on, sometimes will get your vehicle to shift again, untill the problem has reoccured. (if your automatic transmission is going into fail safe) get it repaired right away, damage will happen to your transmission by starting out in a higher gear especially if you have a load on that vehicle, why does the fail safe mode direct the transmission to a higher gear? Try driving down the highway and go to 1st, gear. no do not try that I already have plenty of work, and so do the body shops. The import vehicles usually send a positive signal to the solenoids and the domestic vehicles usually send a ground signal. Clutch packs and Bands, automatic transmissions usually have multiple clutch packs (friction disc plates and steel plates) and a band or two, some transmission models do not have bands. When these clutch packs or bands apply they lock in a gear train componet to give you a specific gear range, as your automatic transmission is going through the upshifting and downshifting, and direction changes, these clutches and bands are applying and releasing in a timley fashion, if your transmission is slipping chances are good that these clutches or bands are worn or damaged within the transmission, and would require replacing. Planetary gear train, usually consist of a compound set, sun gears, ring gears, planetary gears, changing the power flow via clutches and bands through the planetary gear train, gives you your direction of travel, and gear ratios in your various gear positions and changes.
hopefully this has helped in understanding what is going on in your rebuilt automatic transmission. the web master
